Why do we have support groups in the church? First of all, we have them because the church has been called to a ministry of healing. Secondly, we have these groups because of the need – the need people have to make sense of their lives as they try to pick up from their losses and struggle to go on. Lastly, we have them because people who come together for support heal better. Extensive studies by the medical community have proven that attending a support group for 6 weeks to a year will double one’s chance of survival from serious illness. If the pharmaceutical companies come out with a drug with the same efficacy, it would be malpractice not to prescribe it. At the church, we have the unique opportunity to help people make their losses become gains. We are able to provide them with all the resources of the church including that of Jesus Christ, Himself. Therefore, as we fellow strugglers move together along the path to healing from our losses, we also move along the path toward God. We learn that it is in the company of friends that a heart finds a Home.
